Water

Occasionally, water may possess taste, odor, or other aesthetically unappealing characteristics. To better assist residents, please review the color, taste, and odor fact sheet(PDF, 346KB) before contacting the City with concerns—it provides numerous troubleshooting tips and can help identify any potential issues in the City’s system to streamline the process. If you need to report taste, odor, or color issues to the City, please call 209-831

Wastewater

Sewer overflowResidents should be aware of what can and cannot go down the drain to keep the home’s plumbing functioning properly and to prevent sanitary sewer overflows. Only toilet paper and bodily waste should be disposed of in the toilet. Everything else (such as tampons, wet wipes, condoms, paper towels, wrappers, pharmaceuticals, etc.) should be disposed of properly. Visit the City’s Solid Waste page for additional information.

Fats, Oil & Grease (FOG)

Lab boat on riverWhen FOG is poured down the drain, it sticks to the inside of sewer pipes. A buildup of FOG in the pipes restricts wastewater flow, eventually causing blockages. When wastewater cannot pass through a blockage, it results in backed-up sewers that can overflow into your home and storm drains.

Common Examples

  • Cooking oils
  • Animal fats (bacon grease, turkey drippings, etc)
  • Dairy products (yogurts, creams and cheeses)
  • Salad dressings
  • Gravy
  • Automotive liquids
