Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Step 1 - Application Process

How do I submit my application?

Applications for all full‑time and regular part‑time positions with the City of Tracy are submitted through Government Jobs. From the job posting, select Apply, and you will be prompted to create a personalized profile that includes your contact information, education, and work history.

How do I know when you are recruiting?

Please visit our Career Opportunities page to see what jobs are currently open. If a job you are interested in is not currently open for recruitment, you can subscribe to receive job notifications to receive an email when the job(s) become available for application. To sign up, select Job Interest Cards.

How do I know if I am qualified for this job?

The minimum requirements are listed in the job posting and in every job description. Your application will be carefully reviewed, along with any other required materials specified on the job posting, to determine whether you meet these requirements. If you do not meet the requirements or if all the required information/documentation is not provided, your application will not be approved.

Step 2 - Application Screening

Minimum Qualification Review

The HR department will screen applications to ensure they meet the minimum qualifications required for the position, such as education, experience, and any specific certifications or skills listed in the job description. The minimum qualifications for any position can be found on the job description.

Subject Matter Expert (SME) Review

A subject matter expert who is familiar with the responsibilities and requirements of the role, will review the applications that passed the minimum qualification review. They will assess the relevance and depth of each candidate's experience, considering how closely it aligns with the specific needs of the position. Applicants whose backgrounds best match the role's expectations will move forward in the selection process.

Step 3 - Testing & Examinations

Written Testing and Hands-On Skills Assessments

Some positions may require a written test and/or a hands-on skills assessment to evaluate and confirm each candidate’s relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.

Oral Board Interview

Most positions will require an oral board interview. Candidates who successfully complete all of the previous steps will be invited to participate in a structured oral board interview. The oral board interview is an examination conducted in an interview format. Applicants will answer the same set of standardized questions that are designed to assess the knowledge skills, and abilities identified as necessary to successfully perform the job. Oral board panels are comprised of typically three individuals that may include a member of the community, the hiring department, an outside agency and/or a subject matter expert.

Step 4 - Eligible List and Department Interviews

Eligible List

Applicants who successfully complete all phases of the recruitment process are placed on an eligible list. Candidates on the eligible list are ranked according to their final examination score. In most cases, only the highest‑ranking candidates will be invited to participate in the department interview. However, the eligible list may also be used to fill future vacancies.

Eligible lists remain active for one year. In accordance with City of Tracy hiring practices, an eligible list may be extended when appropriate, and lists with a limited number of remaining candidates may be closed once they are no longer viable.

Department Interview

The department will interview the top ranking candidates and select the candidate who's unique combination of education and experience is best suited for the role.

Step 5 - Pre-Employment

Pre-Employment Screening Process

As a condition of employment, the selected candidate will be required to successfully complete professional reference checks, and a LiveScan DOJ/FBI fingerprint background check. Depending on the position, as a condition of employment, the selected candidate may also be required to pass a physical exam including a drug screen. All of these processes must be successfully completed before employment begins.
