MacArthur Drive Widening and Reconstruction Project to Begin Late May, 2019

Additional Lanes and Intersection Improvements Planned for MacArthur Drive between Schulte and Valpico Road

Posted: Apr 17, 2019

Tracy, Calif. – As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to serve the increased traffic demands in our growing community, the Tracy City Council awarded a construction contract at their regular meeting last night for the MacArthur Drive Widening and Reconstruction Project.  The work to widen MacArthur Drive between Schulte Road and Valpico Road from two to four lanes is expected to begin by the end of next month.

During construction, the contractor will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction.  However, there may be occasions when the contractor must flag the traffic for the safety of workers and the general public.  To minimize the traffic delays and inconvenience to the residents, parents and children attending various schools in the project vicinity, the contractor has been directed to start construction after 8 AM while schools are in session.

“The Engineering Division is very excited about this crucial community-enhancing project.  Once complete, this project will deliver much-needed improvements to the quality of life for Tracy motorists,” said Senior Civil Engineer, Paul Verma.

MacArthur Drive has been listed as a major arterial between I-205 and Linne Road in the City’s Roadway Master Plan since 1994.  Per the Master Plan, the City plans to widen all of MacArthur Drive between Valpico and 11th Street.  The City acquired additional right-of-way from the property owners on MacArthur Drive for the new lane in each direction between Schulte and Valpico Road.  Successful completion of this Roadway Master Plan project will address increased traffic in the area, reduce traffic congestion and provide additional capacity to serve future demands.

This project also includes modification of intersections and traffic signals at the intersections of MacArthur Drive and Schulte Road, Yosemite Drive, East Lake Drive, and Valpico Road.  Over the past few months, PG&E and other utility companies have been working on MacArthur Drive to move the utility poles.  These improvements will enhance the level of service at these intersections.

This project has an estimated completion date of spring, 2020 (weather-permitting).  The City is working diligently to minimize any adverse impacts and will be monitoring the area closely.

Motorist are encouraged to plan trips accordingly, use alternate routes when possible and remember to “Slow for the Cone Zone.”  We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience, compliance with all traffic laws and use of caution in the area to ensure the safety of the crews and motorists alike.

Reader boards will be placed onsite notifying drivers who frequent the area of the upcoming construction.  Outreach efforts also include some 1,500 courtesy notices being sent to Tracy residents to ensure they are aware of the planned improvements that may temporarily impact their neighborhoods.  Please help us spread the word and share this information with friends, neighbors, colleagues, constituents and on social media.
