Firefighting Careers

The Tracy Fire Department is continually seeking the interest of talented people up for the challenge of a career in public safety.  If you are interested in joining our team, you must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List.  The Tracy Fire Department will only be hiring from the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List to fill vacant Firefighter positions.

GETTING STARTED:  You must first create your FCTC account and register for the CPAT and/or an upcoming written exam.

To prepare for placement on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List, please review the information about the Written Test and the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT).

  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) – A timed pass/fail test with eight separate events designed to simulate the specific physical demands of firefighting. FCTC is the exclusive statewide CPAT provider for California.
  • Written Testing – A fully validated written general knowledge test, with questions and examples tailored to the profession. Designed to demonstrate your ability to process information and think critically.
  • The FCTC Statewide List – To view the minimum requirements to be placed on the SEL click here.  The Tracy Fire Department may require qualifications above the minimum requirements.
  • Mentoring and Career Guidance – We don’t just want you to survive – we want you to thrive. FCTC is run by the Cal-JAC, the state’s labor-management training and recruitment partnership. That gives you access to career services to help you get a job, and mentoring programs to help you keep it.

The FCTC can also be followed on Facebook and Twitter.

Official City of Tracy Job Applications are available through our Human Resources department  located here.
