MacArthur Drive Widening and Construction Project Update

Additional Lanes and Intersection Improvements Underway for MacArthur Drive between Schulte and Valpico Road

Posted: Jul 31, 2019
Location: Tracy, Calif.

As part of the City’s ongoing efforts to serve the increased traffic demands in our growing community, construction to widen MacArthur Drive between Schulte and Valpico Road from two to four lanes began on May 1, 2019.  PG&E and other utility companies have been working alongside the City’s contractor to move utility poles and other underground utilities, some of which were not included in the original plan and scope of work.  These unforeseen circumstances have caused some minor delays, resulting in the project timeline being pushed out by a few weeks.

To minimize the traffic delays and inconvenience to the residents, parents and children attending various schools in the project vicinity, the contractor has been directed to start construction after 8 AM when our schools are back in session.  One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction on MacArthur, however, there may be occasions when the contractor must flag the traffic for the safety of workers and the general public.  This project also includes intersection and traffic signal improvements at the intersections of MacArthur Drive and Schulte Road, Yosemite Drive, East Lake Drive, and Valpico Road.  During construction, these traffic signals will be on “flash” to accommodate the construction activities.

“We encourage residents and school traffic traveling in the area of this project to anticipate delays and plan accordingly,” said Paul Verma, Senior Civil Engineer.  “Plan ahead for trips, giving yourself some extra time for construction delays and use alternate routes when possible. Safety is the priority, so please ‘Be Work Zone Alert’ and ‘Slow for the Cone Zone,’ as traffic fines are doubled in construction zones.”

MacArthur Drive has been listed as a major arterial between I-205 and Linne Road in the City’s Roadway Master Plan since 1994.  Per the Master Plan, the City plans to widen all of MacArthur Drive between Valpico and 11th Street.  The City acquired additional right-of-way from the property owners on MacArthur Drive for the new lane in each direction between Schulte and Valpico Road.  Successful completion of this Roadway Master Plan project will address increased traffic in the area, reduce traffic congestion and provide additional capacity to serve future demands.

ENCLOSURES: MacArthur Drive Widening and Reconstruction Project Map and Images

The MacArthur Drive Widening and Reconstruction Project is estimated to be complete in early

2020 (weather-permitting).  The City is working diligently to minimize any adverse impacts and will

be monitoring the area closely.  We apologize for any inconvenience this work may cause and appreciate your patience, compliance with all traffic laws and use of caution in the area to ensure the safety of the crews and motorists alike.

Reader boards will be placed onsite notifying drivers who frequent the area of construction updates.  Outreach efforts included some 1,500 courtesy notices sent to Tracy residents to ensure they are aware of the planned improvements that may temporarily impact their neighborhoods.  Please help us spread the word and share this information with friends, neighbors, colleagues, constituents and on social media.
